Macgregor sailing canoe in the summer of 2012, i started construction on a 13′ 7” macgregor sailing canoe, a glue-lapstrake canoe, with plans that i purchased from woodenboat. i finished the canoe in october of same year, smashed a bottle of champagne over the bow on the third swing, and pushed it into nearby ward’s pond.. I’m building a macgregor (15’8” version) sailing canoe. although a very long way off completion i’m thinking about which rig option to choose. the design plans by iain oughtred illustrate the options of either a balanced lug for both main and mizzen or gunter rigs for both. i have had a quote and suggestion from a sail maker to go for “balanced lug main and gunter mizzen combination. The macgregor canoe being a double ended lapstrake design there are 2 apron stems, this is the first one. after the first couple of dry bends i was happy. i had the wood grain oriented all the same way just to make it a little easier to shape later and marked out my points..
See the images above of chris' macgregor sailing canoe. this is a clinker plywood construction designed by iain oughtred. some words from the builder, chris, himself: this is a new build of iain oughtred's tribute to the boat made famous by the scot, john macgregor in the late 19th century.. Iain oughtred - macgregor canoe 15'8" decked version. the macgregor is a sailing, double-paddle canoe suitable for one or two passengers (depending on the size of the cockpit you build)..
