My engine bearers (and the engine....) the woodenboat forum is sponsored by woodenboat publications , publisher of woodenboat magazine. the forum is a free service, and much like the "free" content on public radio, we hope you will support woodenboat by subscribing to this fabulous magazine.. I've always fitted oak bearers to engines in boats, bolted to the engine then bolted seperately to the steel. a chap i spoke to, who fits gardner engines and has done loads over the last 20 years, says i should not use oak and just bolt the engine direct onto steel bearers as that's what he does.. Bearers for a mercruiser 4.2 litre diesel.
I've got a single cylinder sabb g, which is a slow revving 10hp engine. the problem is that, when running, the boat vibrates quite badly, and i'm pretty sure this is purely to do with the way the engine is sat on it's bearers.. A boat with a weak bottom usually translates to engines that are moving up and down because the bottom is doing the same. this can be checked by taking the boat on some rough water and measuring stringer deflection.. The same problem may hold true for wooden boats, where major woodworking reconstruction is sometimes necessary to get the old engine out of its cocoon. after the messy disassembly of all the connections to the old diesel, the dirty engine compartment is ready for a good scrub before work begins on the beds for the new engine..
