Both engines run great, but the port engine gives off a white smoke when above 2,000 or so rpm with maximum smoke at wide open. the temperature and oil pressure are in the normal operating range for both engines.. Since this is a boat and marine diesel forum, and, white smoke seems to come with the territory, i’ll first start by giving you about twenty years of personal experience with white smoke. cummins released the 6bta 250 around 1987 and this was an upgrade of the 6bt 210.. White smoke occurs in a diesel engine when the diesel fuel goes through the engine and reaches the exhaust without having been burned. this typically occurs due to the engine being too cool to burn the fuel, often resulting from low compression in one cylinder, problems with the fuel injection timing or a defective fuel injector.. Went to boat to day to do some work. decided to give engine,md2b, a start as it hadnt been run up for about three weeks. on starting there was some white smoke coming out of exhaust and this continued to come out whilst engine idled for a while.. Older engines will produce a bit of diesel smoke on start up until the engine settles down, and other than the nuisance to neighbours is nothing to worry about. nearly always 'white smoke' reports from marine diesels are steam from the water cooled exhaust, usually because the water flow is restricted and the exhaust is overheating..
