I also said that boats are a terrible financial investment, but i don't expect to get a monetary return out of mine. he said that none of the upkeep i do mattered, since fiberglass has a finite life span, and that at some point in the not too distant future, hulls were going to be losing their keels all over the bay.. Maintenance is key to achieving even normal life expectancy with wood or metal boats. however, fiberglass hulls have been pulled from out of the weeds and up from the depths to be restored to original luster.. That same boat could have been made the same day as another identical one at the factory but received more upgrades and maintenance and today be a boat with a better life expectancy. a well built solid fiberglass hull could live 100 years, but the components attached to it may need more attention along the way..
Re: lifespan of a fiberglass hull i believe someone asked this question a while back - search the boards. the answer that came back was that someone in the govt still has one of the first fiberglass hulls ever made and periodically cuts a piece for materials testing... it's still solid, and it's about 60-some years old.. Life span. boats made of aluminium clearly has the longest life span of the two. a very high material strength, good corrosion resistance, and other advantages of aluminum makes it possible for an aluminum boat to easily live 30-40 years..
